A new programme aimed at Devon based, high growth tech businesses has been recently unveiled by SETsquared Exeter, a member of the thrice ranked global number one business incubator, SETsquared.
With a strong focus on founder ambition and business longevity, SETsquared Exeter’s Business Foundations Programme uses a competency-driven pathway approach to develop well-structured, robust business that are geared for growth.
The tailored support packages are delivered by a team of experienced tech entrepreneurs, professional advisors, mentors and investors, ensuring that founders have access to a wide range of high level expertise as they progress. Areas covered range from accounting, insurance, risk, business strategy, business finance and investor readiness.
The introduction of the Programme is being rolled-out in tandem with a new £800,000 grant award made to the University of Exeter as part of the recently announced £20m University Enterprise Zone awards.
The new funding will allow the SETsquared Exeter team, based at the Exeter Science Park Centre to build on their existing incubation services. These services include supporting tech startups to develop robust businesses and access the experience, expertise and funding required to accelerate their growth.
Speaking as a member of the latest cohort and his experience of the Programme so far, John White CCO of Emtec, a startup combining sensing technologies, artificial intelligence and cloud computing to help advance electrification in the transportation sector said: “Emtec are very pleased to be included on this comprehensive business education programme, the range of topics are clearly relevant to our growth and valuation plans. There is genuine benefit in taking time away from business pressures to refresh ideas and receive valuable insights from the SETsquared coaches. The structured topics and monthly schedule fit into my business life easily and provide a disciplined spotlight that often points out new directions and actions we should take to accelerate or strengthen our corporate position. 5 stars!”
Samantha Mickleburgh, Entrepreneur in Residence (EiR) explained: “The launch of the new Foundations Programme is borne out of the experience the dedicated SETsquared Exeter team have derived from working with high tech start-up businesses over the past few years and is a really exciting and fundamentally game-changing introduction that I am thrilled to be part of. The structured programme, incorporating our wrap-around support will uniquely help embryonic entrepreneurs and innovators to safely set out on their ambitious business adventures and will provide confidence for the future. As an EiR involved with high-tech, high growth potential start-ups I feel confident that with the introduction of this Foundations Programme we are truly setting up the Founders for a solid future.”
Stephen Moore another of the Programme’s EiRs concluded: “Since beginning my work on the Business Foundations Programme within SETsquared Exeter, I have been hugely encouraged by the businesses that have joined the initiative. There is a rich mixture of innovative and forward-thinking business people striving to bring their ideas and inventions to market and bring employment to the South West region and beyond. These fledgling businesses and their founders have the enthusiasm and determination to succeed, but their success can be accelerated by avoiding some of the pitfalls and deadends that we, those of us whom have started and grown businesses before, have had the misfortune to have to navigate in the past. I see my role in this programme to use the experience I have gained to help chart as smooth a path as possible from incorporation to a mature, growth based business delivering the innovative solutions to the challenges we face whether in technology, automation, climate or other aspects of our world.”
